The Unethical Nature of Using Suntan Lotion and Spray Tan in Jiu-Jitsu

Cheating in sports is never acceptable, and it's especially egregious in a martial art like Jiu-Jitsu. As practitioners of this noble art, we are supposed to uphold the values of honor, respect, and integrity. We are supposed to test our skills against each other in a fair and safe manner and to learn from our victories and defeats. We are supposed to compete to improve ourselves and our art, not to gain an unfair advantage or to deceive others.

Unfortunately, cheating has always been a part of sports, and Jiu-Jitsu is no exception. From steroids to sandbagging, from stalling to stalling, from fake injuries to fake humility, from dirty tricks to dirty politics, there are many ways that some people try to cheat in Jiu-Jitsu. However, a new trend has emerged in recent years that is both disturbing and ridiculous: Suntan Lotion and Spray Tan being used in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

The logic behind this trend is that applying Suntan Lotion or Spray Tan to your body can make it harder for your opponent to grip and control you in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. By creating a slippery surface on your skin, you can escape from submissions, sweep your opponent, or score points more easily. And by blending in with the mat or the environment, you can make it harder for your opponent to see or anticipate your movements.

The Health Hazards of Suntan Lotion and Spray Tan

However, this trend is not only unethical but also impractical and unsafe. First of all, it's unethical because it violates the spirit of Jiu-Jitsu, which is based on the principle of mutual benefit and respect. If you use Suntan Lotion or Spray Tan to gain an advantage, you disrespect your opponent and the art itself. You are also setting a bad example for others, especially the new generation of practitioners who look up to you as a role model.

Secondly, it's impractical because it doesn't work as well as you might think. While it's true that Suntan Lotion or Spray Tan can make your skin smoother and slipperier, it can also make it more sensitive and vulnerable to abrasions, rashes, or infections. It can also rub off on your opponent, the mat, or the gear, causing friction, staining, or irritation. And it can create a false sense of security or invincibility, leading you to rely on gimmicks rather than on solid techniques and strategies.

Finally, it's unsafe because it can put you and your opponent at risk of injury. If you slip or slide too much, you can fall or twist joints, causing sprains, fractures, or dislocations. If you overheat or dehydrate, you can suffer from cramps, exhaustion, or heatstroke. And if you irritate or infect your skin, you can spread germs or viruses to others, causing a public health hazard.

In conclusion, cheating in Jiu-Jitsu is never acceptable, and using Suntan Lotion or Spray Tan in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is a ridiculous and dangerous form of cheating. As responsible and respectful practitioners, we should avoid this trend and discourage others from following it. We should also uphold the values of honor, respect, and integrity in our training, competition, and daily life. By doing so, we can improve ourselves and our art and positively impact others and the world around us.

My Personal Experience at ADCC West Coast Trials 2022

At ADCC West Coast Trials, I encountered an opponent who used Spray Tan to make it harder for me to grip and control him. It was a shocking and frustrating experience, as I felt like I was competing against a greased pig. Despite my efforts to adapt and overcome his slippery tactics, I lost the match, which left a bitter taste in my mouth. To top it all off, he did not even have any feet. I initially felt sorry for him, but as he jumped Ashi, I was confident, and as I attempted to escape from his greased-up claws, I realized that he was crushing my toes with repeated elbows. Unbelievably, I tried to signal the ref that he was lubed up, to no avail.

In conclusion, cheating has no place in Jiu-Jitsu, and Suntan Lotion and Spray Tan are unethical and impractical, hazardous, and damaging to the Jiu-Jitsu community. It's crucial to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior or method to the proper authorities. Jiu-Jitsu is a beautiful art that deserves respect and appreciation, and it's our responsibility to uphold its values and traditions. Let's train hard, compete fairly, and strive to be better than yesterday.
